Oakland County, MI (pop. 1,251,000) County Seat: Pontiac/Waterford.  Oakland County is located in southeast Michigan, immediately north of Detroit. The County is governed by an elected County Executive, David Coulter, and a 21-member Board of Commissioners who are elected by district for a two-year term of office.  Deputy Corporation Counsel is an appointed position, serves at the pleasure of the County Executive and reports to the Corporation Counsel.  The Office of Corporation Counsel is responsible for representing the County, the County Executive, the Board of Commissioners, the Countywide Elected Officials, the Department Heads and Agencies of the County in all legal matters affecting the County.  The Deputy Corporation Counsel serves as a trusted deputy of the County’s appointed Corporation Counsel.  As delegated, the position is responsible for professional legal work of the in-house legal team of 31 employees and outside legal counsel as necessary.

Deputy Corporation Counsel will be responsible for the day-to-day business of the Office, including management of service requests, case assignments, litigation tracking and strategy, and employee oversite and evaluation.  Deputy Corporation Counsel will also serve as a thought partner to the Corporation Counsel to provide proactive legal and policy counsel to the County Executive and other leaders in the County.

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to lead and direct a professional legal team.
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate issues and make comprehensive recommendations regarding legal and policy matters before the County.
  • Ability and commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within the office of Corporation Counsel and as an overarching county government priority.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing and make presentation in a public forum.
  • A customer service orientation, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public in a variety of cooperative and contentious situations.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris doctorate degree.
  • At least seven (7) years of successful experience as a practicing attorney and be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan. If coming from another State, be a member in good standing of that State Bar and become a member of the State Bar of Michigan within the minimum time necessary (out-of-state attorneys are encouraged to review Michigan Bar reciprocity rules).  The County, at its discretion, may consider an alternative level of work experience.
  • Experience in municipal law, including contracts, administrative, civil and criminal, is preferred.
  • Skill in compiling and evaluating complex information and formulating effective legal recommendations.
  • Attend meetings scheduled at times other than normal business hours.


Salary range is $129,817 to $173,929 DOQE.
